2021 It was a challenging but still successful year at Refuge 31. We’re all just happy it’s over!

The year began with the delivery and airing of The Science Fiction Makers on Super Channel. The feature documentary, which examines three unique Science-Fiction writers, is part two of the Faith in Imagination series. The first part being The Fantasy Makers. Both films have won numerous accolades, awards and been screened around the world. You can hear more during the interview with our friends at the  Pints with Jack podcast.

Production managed to wind its way through Covid protocols, egregious travel requirements, all kinds of restrictions and lockdowns but still able to bring a feature documentary titled: The Satanic Panic and the Religious Battle for the Imagination to near completion. The film, which travelled throughout the United States including GameHole Con in Wisconsin, follows the Reverend Derek White as he reflects and examines that very strange time during the 80’s where a role playing game became an almost hysterical focus of psychologists, parental groups and religious leaders. The film will be airing on Superchannel in Canada this spring as well as a few festivals and cons.

R31 also was busy working away on the film titled Conform. The TV-hour made for educational viewing examines the Mennonite migration from Manitoba to Mexico in the 1920’s and is scheduled to be completed in 2022 with screenings in fall. It was filmed partially at the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach, Manitoba throughout 2021.

There’s also some much bigger news coming up at R31 in the next few weeks. We’re keeping that under wraps for the moment so stay tuned.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
