The russlaender migration

DOCUMENTARY, 2025

1924. Facing an impossible choice—to stay or to leave—nearly one-third of Mennonites abandon the Soviet Union.

This feature documentary follows a commemorative train journey from Quebec to Abbotsford, where descendants and scholars retrace the path of the 20,000 immigrants known as the Russlaender—and the lasting effects their arrival had in Canada, including on Indigenous peoples whose lands would become part of this new settlement story.
